To this day Moroccan women are said to use powdered lapis for tattoos.
“Book of Stones” also tells us how lapis was recommended as treatment for melancholia (described by Dr. Samuel Johnson as his ‘black dog’). If four measures of Lapis Lazuli are taken with lukewarm rosewater’ it reduces the gastric juices, one of the causes for melancholia.
It also recommends lapis for asthma. It can remove boils and it is also good for pain in the bladder. ‘If it is powdered on a piece of wood from a palm tree, it is useful for open ulcers that eat at the skin. And if it is powdered with vinegar and spread over leprosy spots it fades them away’.
